The Mossi Kingdoms

Wikipedia gives "the Mossi Empire" as an alternative name for the Mossi Kingdoms, which dominated the upper basin of the Volta River, modern Burkina Faso, from the 11th century until they were taken over by the French in 1896. The French created a colony called Upper Volta, which gained independence in 1958; the name of the Republic thus formed was changed to Upper Volta in 1984.

According to Wikipedia, "Ouagadougou was often considered the primary Mossi kingdom ... but was not the capital of the Mossi kingdoms as each retained autonomy."
